A tuneful spring at Leopold Square

Between May and September Leopold Square in Sheffield will be hosting an extensive programme of weekend entertainment ranging from funky jazz bands to soulful swing vocalists and now the upmarket venue is delighted to announce May's eclectic line up. 

To kick start this year's musical entertainment 'The Big Swing' will be returning to the square on Sunday 1st May for an afternoon of jump jive, electro swing and live music. From 2pm the wonderfully talented jazz singer Jenny Smith will be adding to the rhythmic atmosphere as she performs a range of popular swing tunes and Latin American influenced jazz classics.

Following the popular swing event, the square will be transformed into a Salsa haven for Cubana's Salsa in the Square, which will welcome live music from Orquesta Cuba Son and DJ Spice from 5pm. Dancers are invited to attend the party and show off their skills.

On Saturday 7th May Leopold Square will come alive with the sound of local musician Danny Maddocks, who will be performing a mix of infectious jazz, heart felt soul and pop classics between 2pm and 4.30pm.

Local double bassist and vocalist Nicola Farnon will then fill The Square with the unique sound of her stunning voice and captivating double bass on Sunday 8th May when she entertains visitors with a wide variety of classics songs from the 1930s to the 1970s. 

The following weekend on Saturday 14th visitors need to prepare to turn up the funk when Leopold Square welcomes WeFire Collective who will be performing a range of tunes based around the celebrated bassist and producer Hamlet Luton. 

Continuing the weekend's jazz theme, on Sunday 15th May the dramatic sound of The Dizzy Club, made up of vocals, a violin, a double bass and drums, will be amplified around the leisure venue for all to enjoy from 2pm.

On Saturday 21st May, Leopold Square will be transported back to a time when 'Le Jazz' was at its hottest as The Hot Club of Clowntown introduces visitors to the traditional sound of gypsy style jazz. 

Heating things up on Sunday 22nd May, Octofunk will be inviting Sheffield residents to join them for a Neo-Soul jazz experience they're unlikely to forget. Performing a variety of soulful tunes, the 8-piece groove machine will be exciting the eardrums of everyone at Leopold Square as they bring a fresh sound to traditional funk.

To round off May's entertainment, on Sunday 29th May 'The Big Swing' will again return to Leopold Square and bring with it the jazzy vibes of Ryan Taylor Hammond Trio who will be entertaining visitors with a wonderful mix of rare groove, blues notes Latin and swing.To end the afternoon in true style, Salsa in The Square will be treating Salsa fans to an evening of Cuban inspired music and free dance lessons from 5pm – 10pm.
